Coolie vs War 2 Box Office: Rajinikanth Stuns Hrithik Roshan & Jr NTR With Record-Breaking Run

Rajinikanth’s Coolie dominates the Independence Day box office, leaving Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 behind.

This Independence Day weekend witnessed a massive box-office showdown between Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan–Jr NTR’s War 2. While both films opened big, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Rajinikanth-starrer has clearly taken the lead, outperforming the high-budget YRF spy thriller across India and overseas.
Coolie storms ahead in India
Coolie opened to a thunderous ₹65 crore nett on day one, followed by ₹54.75 crore on Friday, ₹39.5 crore on Saturday, and ₹35.25 crore on Sunday. By Monday, with ₹12 crore more, the film crossed the ₹200 crore mark in India, making it the biggest Tamil hit of 2025 so far.
In comparison, War 2 earned ₹52 crore on Thursday, ₹57.35 crore on Friday, ₹33.25 crore on Saturday, and ₹32.15 crore on Sunday. With Monday’s ₹8.75 crore, the Hrithik Roshan–Jr NTR starrer has reached ₹183.5 crore domestically, trailing behind Coolie.
Worldwide box office battle
Globally, Coolie has smashed records, especially in North America and Canada, taking its total to a whopping ₹404 crore worldwide. War 2, despite its massive scale, has collected ₹300.50 crore worldwide according to YRF.
Budget & release scale
War 2 was mounted on a gigantic ₹400 crore budget, shot across multiple countries with extensive CGI, and released on 5,000 screens across India.
Coolie, on the other hand, was made on an estimated ₹350 crore budget and released across 1,980 screens in India and in over 100 countries worldwide. Despite a smaller release, the Rajinikanth starrer is already nearing breakeven, while War 2 is struggling to catch up.
